William Vandyke

William R. VanDyke, 93, of Boyers passed away Monday afternoon at his home.

A son of Harry and Sadie Shaw VanDyke, he was born April 17, 1922, in Harrisville. He was a graduate of Harrisville High School.

Bill was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He had 43 years of service as a machine operator at Cooper Bessemer, retiring in 1986.

He was a member of the Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church of America. He was a life member of the Slippery Rock VFW and a member of the Slippery Rock American Legion Post 393. He enjoyed hunting, gardening, bowling in the Early Bird League of Grove City and had been active in the Slippery Rock Senior Center.

He was first married to Sara I. Haggerty on Oct. 31, 1942, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 10, 1993. He then married Garnet Bowser Heckethorn on June 24, 1995. She survives along with a daughter, Beverly P. Sloan and her husband, Don Hefferman, of Mercer; two sons, William E. VanDyke of Lordstown, Ohio, and Wayne D. VanDyke and his wife, Bobbi of Harrisville; one son-in-law, David Coast of Harrisville, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; one daughter, Elaine J. Coast; and one daughter-in-law, Karen VanDyke.

VANDYKE — Friends of William R. VanDyke, who died Monday, June 29, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Friday at the Jamison Funeral Home, 117 N. Main St., Harrisville.Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Scott Fleming, pastor of Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church of America, officiating.
