Thousands in city, township lose power during thunderstorm

More than 4,000 customers were without electricity during a thunderstorm Tuesday afternoon.

Power went out for 1,966 customers in the city of Butler and 2,100 customers in Butler Township around 1 p.m., West Penn Power spokesman Todd Meyers said.

Service for some customers in the city was restored around 1:40 p.m.

Service for about half of the customers has been restored currently, with the remainder expected to be restored by 3 p.m., according to the company’s website.

The storm produced heavy rains and lightning, but no substantial incidents, said Steve Bicehouse, director of county emergency services.
