BlueSox finally break loose

Butler BlueSox manager Jason Radwan enjoyed a welcomed sight Tuesday night at Kelly Automotive Park.

Hits, runs ... plenty of both.

The BlueSox banged out 11 hits — all singles — and rolled to an 8-0 victory over the West Virginia Miners, getting to the .500 mark for the first time this season. Butler is hitting just .219 as a team so far.

“It was good to see all those runs,” Radwan admitted. “Even in our first two wins, we had to struggle in nail-biters. We needed a game like this where we could relax and settle in.”

Radwan saw plenty of pitching as well. New Castle graduate Andre Jones and Cody Jackson combined on a three-hit shutout. Jones threw just 68 pitches in the first six innings despite enduring a 22-pitch first inning.

“He was getting ahead of hitters and pitched to contact well,” Radwan said.

Jones, a California (Pa.) University junior, struck out only one batter. He threw fewer than 10 pitches in four of his six innings.

Jones pitched for the first time in nearly a month. His collegiate season was shut down early by a bad shoulder.

“It felt good to get back on the mound,” Jones said. “I was able to keep the ball down and make them hit my pitches.

“Getting an early lead helped, too. When you get on top that quickly, you don’t feel like you have to make the perfect pitch.”

The BlueSox (3-3) built a 3-0 lead in the first four innings despite grounding into two double plays, having two runners cut down trying to steal third and getting another caught in a rundown after being run off second by a teammate.

“They did a lot of clutch hitting to off-set that stuff,” West Virginia manager Tim Epling said. “And their pitchers did a good job locating the ball. We swung at a few too many high pitches, but, basically, they just played a much better game than we did.”

Leadoff batter Matt Hansen had three singles for the BlueSox. Tyler Sullivan, Mike Arman and Russell Clark had two singles each. Sullivan and Clark scored two runs each.

Dave Marcus delivered a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded to cap a three-run eighth inning for the BlueSox that put the game away.

Jackson worked the final three innings for the save, striking out three.

“Cody came in and threw hard,” Radwan said. “I know we’ve got the pitching. If we hit the way we’re capable, coupled with our defensive ability ... We could be a pretty good team.”

Center fielder Michael Patrick made two stellar catches Tuesday, running down fly balls in the gap. Left fielder Alex Miklos made a running catch along the left field line as well.

“Our outfield was fantastic tonight. They bailed me out, for sure,” Jones said.

The Miners and BlueSox play again at 6:35 p.m. today at Kelly Automotive Park, the second of a four-game homestand for Butler.

Epling wasn’t too concerned about Tuesday’s shutout loss.

“This is a different ballpark and we hit too many fly balls they were able to run down. We’re like a lot of other teams in the league. All of our guys aren’t here yet,” he said. “We just want to play .500 ball for the first 10 games or so, then go from there.”
