Vehicle shears pole in high-speed ride

Passenger jumped out

SPRINGFIELD TWP, Mercer County — A Grove City man was driving drunk and traveling at more than 100 mph during a reckless jaunt that passed through a cemetery and forced his passenger to momentarily seize control of the car, state police said.

The high-speed joy ride ended Friday night near the Premium Outlets only after the suspect lost control of his airborne sports car and slammed into a utility pole, splitting it in half.

But 30-year-old Louis J. Hebert wasn’t done, police said. He allegedly fled on foot into woods in his short-lived getaway from police. He was eventually caught and taken to the Grove City Medical Center.

Police did not immediately charge Hebert, whom they suspect was driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Police said Hebert was southbound on Route 19 about 8:15 p.m. when his 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer veered into oncoming traffic. His front-seat passenger, 19-year-old Nicholas A. Robinson of Grove City, grabbed the steering wheel to avoid a collision.

The car turned around and Hebert started driving north on Route 19, headed to Route 208, at speeds between 120 and 130 mph, according to a police report.

Robinson told troopers that he was an unwilling participant in the dangerous excursion.

“(Robinson) reported he was in fear of his life due to the driver’s actions,” the police report said, “and wanted out of the vehicle.”

But Hebert allegedly refused to let the teenager out.

However, at some point Robinson again grabbed the steering wheel to take control of the car.

Police said he “used the vehicle brakes in an attempt to slow the vehicle down.”

The car crossed the southbound lane and went off the road, traveling into a gas station parking lot. Robinson bailed out of the still-moving vehicle.

But moments later, Hebert backed up, police said, nearly hitting Robinson and traveling through the intersection of Routes 19 and 208.

The vehicle, still headed in reverse, continued into a cemetery, knocking a gravestone off its base, police said.

Hebert sped forward and returned to Route 19 northbound before crossing the center line and almost hitting several oncoming vehicles.

Police said the suspect eventually turned east onto Route 208, heading toward the Premium Outlets, and hit a ditch. The car careened into rocks, signs and a culvert pipe before lifting off the ground near Hovis Auto Supply.

The airborne vehicle hit and sheared off a utility pole, and landed on the side of Route 208 south facing north.

Hebert fled on foot but police found him and took him to the hospital. The extent of his injuries, if any, was not immediately known.
