BlueSox opening season tonight

Butler travels to Jamestown for 2015 debut before returning home for Thursday game

The roster shuffle is already on for the Butler BlueSox.

The Prospect League team opens its seventh season tonight at Jamestown (N.Y.) before commencing its home schedule Thursday evening against the Champion City Kings at Kelly Automotive Park.

Only 17 players were available for a full workout Tuesday.

“We’ve got eight players still involved in NCAA Tournament play,” first-year manager Jason Radwan said. “That’s a good thing, though. They are quality players contributing to quality seasons.

“We’ve got two more players coming in today, another four expected tomorrow ... We’ll be fine.”

The BlueSox have signed two players — infielder Mark DeVita from Gannon and outfielder Michael Armen from Central Connecticut State — to temporary contracts.

“They will help us and are expected to contribute as much as everyone else on the team,” Radwan said.

So it goes for the BlueSox, who are coming off a 40-20 season, including a sizzling 25-7 second-half record that landed the franchise its first-ever playoff spot.

University of Cincinnati catcher and Pine-Richland product Russell Clark is back for his third year with the BlueSox. He hit .216 in 38 games last year.

Clark saw little action at Cincinnati this spring before a strained quad curtailed his collegiate season halfway through.

“I’m 100 percent and ready to go,” Clark said. “I came back here for the competition and it’s close to home.

“And I’m confident we can continue to build on what we did last year.”

Clark caught the BlueSox’ first 30 games last season and is the only catcher in camp right now. Two others will be returning soon.

“He’s looking forward to seeing a lot of duty and working with this pitching staff,” Radwan said. “Russell does a great job with our pitchers.”

The BlueSox will have three left-handers in their starting rotation, including Butler graduate Tyler Slepski, who is still with Mercyhurst in the NCAA Division II World Series. Larry Wood, who stands 6-foot-5, and Ben Hartz will be the other southpaw starters.

Radwan said he wanted Slepski back after the hurler made a couple of appearances with the team late last year.

“He impressed me,” Radwan said. “He’s a crafty left-hander with a good mix of pitches.”

Zach Spangler. a Seneca Valley graduate coming off a successful freshman season at Kent State, will begin the summer as a right-handed relief specialist for the BlueSox.

The 6-foot-4 Spangler uses a sidearm whipping motion as his delivery.

“I was developing some arm soreness last year throwing over the top,” Spangler said. “I started dropping down and throwing sidearm and my arm felt fine. And it’s been effective for me.”

Spangler had a 3.18 earned run average in 17 innings for Kent State this spring. He’s watched video on major league sidearm hurlers Darren O’Day of Baltimore and Brad Zeigler of the Arizona Diamiondbacks.

“I was as effective against right-handers as I was against lefties this spring,” Spangler said. “Both sides hit about .210 against me.”

Grove City High graduate and Kent State outfielder Alex Miklos is back for his third season with the BlueSox — and this summer holds special significance to him.

Miklos hit .362 with 17 stolen bases during a stellar junior year at Kent State before tearing his ACL late in the campaign.

“I was going to play summer ball in the Northwoods League, but that injury nixed that,” Miklos said. “I did my rehab and thought I was ready for this spring, but the knee didn’t feel right.

“I wound up needing a second surgery and missed the spring season.”

Miklos was only medically cleared to play last week. He received a medical red-shirt in college and will play his final season with Kent State in 2016.

“This is my (2015) season,” Miklos said. “It’s also my last summer collegiate season, so I’m leaving it all out there. I’m going to enjoy this because I may not be playing summer baseball again.”
