Teen in April crash now faces DUI charges

His vehicle hit police SUV

BUTLER TWP — Police said the 18-year-old Renfrew man who crashed into the back of a Butler city police vehicle last month was driving under the influence of marijuana and alcohol, according to court documents filed Friday.

Township police charged Joseph B. Studeny with six counts of DUI, including operating a vehicle under a high rate of alcohol and under the influence of a controlled substance.

Studeny’s vehicle struck the back of a city K-9 unit SUV along Whitestown Road about 1:50 p.m. April 29, directly in front of the Butler Township Fire District 3, Station 2.

Officer Dave Villotti with city police was conducting a traffic stop on another vehicle at the time.

Officer Villotti was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

Studeny was given multiple field sobriety tests after police noticed signs of impairment, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, trouble standing and a smell of alcohol coming from his breath.

Studeny told police he was texting when he struck the back of Villotti’s vehicle.

After failing the sobriety tests, police said Studeny admitted he hid a bottle of vodka in a bag in the backseat of his car.

He reportedly told police he smokes marijuana daily, but said he did not that day. Studeny was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a blood test.

Results of that test showed Studeny had a blood-alcohol content of 0.135 percent. In Pennsylvania the legal driving limit for someone under age 21 is .02.

His blood also tested positive for marijuana, according to documents.

In addition to his six DUI charges, Studeny is facing charges of reckless driving, careless driving, prohibiting text-based communications, a minor operating a vehicle with alcohol and possession of alcohol by a minor.
