Special homes needed

There is a definite need in Butler for HUD handicapped/wheelchair-accessible apartments. Many such apartments want people of at least age 67. However, handicapped people come in all ages.

After breaking two bones in my ankle, I was admitted to Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where it was determined that I had osteoporosis and probably would not walk again, and needed to move to a wheelchair-accessible apartment. But all the apartments I have investigated are full. One landlady with 10 apartments, all occupied, said as soon as an apartment would become available the other tenants were given first choice to relocate, then there was a long waiting list.

With the number of baby boomers growing older, I believe this need will increase.

At the age of 58, I am too young to be at Sunnyview, living in half a room, living with people older than me, and spending a large amount of money to do it. Should anyone know of a handicapped apartment, I would love to be informed.
