Memorial Day events slated around county

Here are some Memorial Day services scheduled in Butler County.

Bradys BendBradys Bend Post 488 members on Monday will go at 8 a.m. to the post for a flag raising at 8:30 a.m.; then at 9 a.m. to Perry Township Honor Roll; 9:30 a.m. to the Robinson Cemetery, Hillsville; 10 a.m. to Sgt. Carl F. Curran Bridge with Post 402; 10:30 a.m. to the Oak Grove Cemetery; 11 a.m. to Bradys Bend Cemetery; 11:30 a.m. to the Saint Mary’s Cemetery; noon to the Bradys Bend Honor Roll, and return to Post 488 for lunch.After lunch there will be a ceremony honoring Monte Bishop who was killed in World War I, one of the founders of Post 488, at Bradys Bend Cemetery.

ButlerButler County Veterans Services will host its Memorial Day parade on Monday in downtown Butler.The parade will begin at 10:40 a.m. at Diamond Park. It will continue on Main Street up to Penn Street. A ceremony will be at North Cemetery at the conclusion of the parade.

East BradyEast Brady Post 402 will go at 9 a.m. Monday to Saint Eusebius Cemetery, before Mass); 9:30 a.m. to the Phillipston Cemetery; 10 a.m. to the Sgt. Carl F. Curran Bridge with Post 488; noon to the Bradys Bend Honor Roll.After lunch, people will go to Bradys Bend Cemetery for a ceremony honoring Monte Bishop, founder of Post 488.

FreeportVFW Post 6648 will host a Memorial Day program that starts with a parade at 9:30 a.m. Monday.It will start at Freeport Junior High School, and will follow Buffalo, Fifth, Market and Second streets to Riverside Drive.Riverfront services will be at 10 a.m. in front of Freeport Towers.In case of rain, services will be in St. Mary Mother of God Catholic Church on High Street.HarrisvilleAmerican Legion Harrisville Post 852 is sponsoring a parade at 1 p.m. Monday. A memorial service will follow at Community Park.The American Legion student award winners participating in the service are E.J. Webb, son of Earl and Tina Webb, and Jessica Fischer, daughter of James and Holly Fischer.Harrisville Borough Volunteer Fire Department and the Community Band join the American Legion in coordinating the events.MarsMars VFW Post 7505, 331 Mars Valencia Road, will have a memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday, followed by refreshments.Penn TownshipThe Penn Township Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the corner of Airport Road and Three Degree Road.The ceremony will last about one hour, rain or shine, and conclude with a missing man formation fly over. The service is held by the Penn Township Veterans Association.ProspectThe Prospect Memorial/Community Day Parade is set for 11 a.m. Saturday in the borough.RimersburgShearer-Shick Post 454 of the American Legion and VFW Post 7132 will host events on Sunday and Monday.On Sunday there will be a memorial service at 3 p.m. at Veterans Park.If there is rain, the service will move to the Rimersburg United Methodist Church.On Monday, the parade will start at 9 a.m. at the Rimersburg Elementary School and proceed to the cemetery, where a memorial program will be held.In the event of rain, the program will move inside Union High School.SaxonburgThe Saxonburg VFW and Saxonburg American Legion posts will host a Memorial Day parade and service at 10:30 a.m. Monday.The parade will start at the borough building and end at Roebling Park, where services will be held.Slippery RockMemorial Day services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Slippery Rock Cemetery on Cemetery Road.Slippery Rock Mayor Ron Fodor will be the speaker. Charlee Caldwell and Quinn Cypher, the 2015 outstanding Slippery Rock eighth grade students, will recite In Flanders Fields and Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. A gun salute and wreath laying will be presented by veterans. The Slippery Rock High School band will play.Frank P. Cheeseman Post 393 of the American Legion is the sponsor for this observance.A picnic will follow the ceremonies at Slippery Rock Community Park.West SunburyMembers of American Legion Post 243 will be joined by Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Moniteau School District choir members at West Sunbury’s annual Memorial Day ceremony at 1 p.m. Monday.The choir will sing, and the scouts will raise and lower the flags.Post 243 Commander Don Cunningham said the ceremony lasts about 90 minutes, and it will take place in front of the West Sunbury car wash, 143 Main St.Post 243 members will give speeches, and veterans will receive flags to honor their service.Zelienople/HarmonyAmerican Legion Post 474 will have multiple services Monday. The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a service at Zelienople Cemetery, followed at 9:30 a.m. by a service in Harmony Square followed immediately by a ceremony at Harmony Cemetery and a ceremony at the Route 19 bridge.The main ceremony will be at 11 a.m. in Zelienople Memorial Park.
