Middlesex Twp. hires 2 part-time officers

Another promoted to full-time position

MIDDLESEX TWP — A 2013 Mars High School graduate is among the new faces in the police department.

Township manager Eric Kaunert announced at Wednesday night’s township supervisors meeting that two officers were hired this month and one officer was promoted to full time.

Alyssa Matthews, a township resident and a Mars graduate, was hired as a part-time officer.

Matthews is a graduate of Butler County Community College and learned just before the meeting that she had passed the state certification test to be a police officer.

She will begin patrolling the township within a few weeks.

Mark Heider of Sarver also was hired as a part-time police officer. Kaunert said Heider is a full-time employee of the state Department of Transportation.

Bryan Costanzo, who has served the township for two years as a part-time officer, has been promoted to full-time, Kaunert said.

He said Costanzo’s promotion is a result of the retirement of Ron Perkins, who was an officer for 25 years. He retired in April.

One of the new part-time officers will fill Costanzo’s former position, and the other will fill a position that has gone unfilled for a few years.

“It’s sad to lose Ron Perkins,” Kaunert said. “He was a valuable component of the police department, but we’re excited for Bryan, who’s also been a valuable employee.”

The new officers will be introduced at the June 17 supervisors meeting, which Costanzo also will attend.
