SV volleyball in finals

Karns CityþÄôs Taylor Downs steals home on a passed ball during the Lady Gremlins 9-3 victory over Redbank Valley at Chicora Elementary Field.

Seneca Valley’s boys volleyball team rebounded when it mattered most.

After taking a two-sets-to-none lead over Bethel Park in Tuesday’s WPIAL Class AAA semifinal playoff, the Raiders stumbled in the third set, scoring just 16 points.

SV responded with a dominating win in the fourth set to eliminate the Black Hawks by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 16-25 and 25-15.

“This was just the third time in our history that we’ve made it to the semifinals and we got caught up in the emotion,” Raiders’ coach Dan Follett said. “We got a bit ahead of ourselves, but came back strong in the fourth set.”

John Price tallied 11 kills for the Raiders (14-2), Taylor Matthews 10 kills, Stephen Jones 11 digs and Anthony Sprentz 39 assists.

The victory sets the stage for round three between Seneca Valley and Fox Chapel in Friday’s WPIAL championship match, slated for 8 p.m. at Baldwin High School.

The Raiders and Foxes split their two meetings during the regular season.

“We’ve been ranked 1-2 in the WPIAL all year,” Follett said. “Both teams have backed that up with their play. It should be a fun and exciting match between two very talented teams.”
