TOWN CRIER

BUTLER TWP — The Butler School Board voted Monday night to spend money for changes at the junior high because it will become a middle school in the next school year.

Board members approved replacing carpet in 42 classrooms and offices this summer for $165,700. The district also will seek bids for an eight-foot high chain link fence to surround a new playground outside the building.

Under the recently approved school consolidation plan, fifth and sixth graders this fall will go to the junior high building, which will be remade into the new middle school.

In other action, the board:

• Approved the termination of David Smith, an IT employee for the district.

• Voted against a revised 2015-16 school year calendar that would have added two more scheduled snow days. Because the school year is beginning after Labor Day, board members did not want to push the last day of school further into June.
