Flooding issue topic of Harmony meeting

HARMONY — A meeting to discuss updates on the Connoquenessing Creek flood plain and previous plans to fill a portion of it is slated for Wednesday.

The 7 p.m. meeting is being organized by the Preserving Harmony Committee at the Harmony Museum, 218 Mercer St.

Creative Real Estate Development is developing a Murphy Tractor business on Route 19 in Jackson Township and sought a permit to dump dirt from that site in the flood plain on land it owns north of the creek. But the company has withdrawn the permit application, said Don Rodgers of Creative Real Estate Development.

Rodgers would not discuss the withdrawn application, but said the Murphy Tractor development is progressing.

John Ruch, president of Historic Harmony, said there has been “substantial local opposition” for more than a decade to the development and filling in of the flood plain. He said the location is adjacent to the borough’s historic district, and noted that activity on the land could cause flooding.

When remnants of Hurricane Ivan struck in September 2004, the area was under water.

Preserving Harmony, which is part of the Historic Harmony, was established in April due to the plans to fill a portion of the flood plain.
