CWNC blanks Rochester, 2-0

Two freshmen came up with big hits to help the Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic baseball team advance with a 2-0 win over Rochester Tuesday afternoon at Chippewa Field.

Jack Anderson doubled in a run in the sixth and Danny Lynch singled in the sixth to plate runs for the sixth-seeded Trojans (14-7).

“To have two freshmen come up in those spots and really deliver is phenomenal,” CWNC coach John Haggerty said.

North Catholic will meet No. 14 Bishop Canevin in the quarterfinals next week. The Crusaders advanced with a 9-3 upset win over third-seeded Vincentian Academy.

Nick Tunstall earned the win for the Trojans, striking out seven batters in seven innings of work.

“I was trying to go after everybody,” Tunstall said. “Until they proved me wrong, I needed to put in a first-pitch strike and see what happened.”

North Catholic added the insurance run with aggressive running. Tyler Morris drew a lead-off walk in the sixth and stole second.

He later scored on Lynch's single.

“That's our brand of baseball,” Haggerty said. “We know we'll win more than we lose. We know if we stay aggressive and play that small-ball type of mentality that we'll create wins and opportunities to win ball games.”
