I was surprised to learn that key parts of the Patriot Act will expire on June 1 of this year. In case you missed John Oliver’s segment on government spying and his interview with Edward Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked a trove of secrets, here’s a quick heads-up:

Now is our chance to end mass spying on Americans. Section 215, the NSA claims, allows it to collect information about all Americans’ phone calls. The intelligence agencies will work hard to make sure that provision gets reauthorized, but we must fight back.

We should all be calling our members of Congress and telling them to oppose the current version of the USA Freedom Act because it doesn’t go far enough to constrain domestic surveillance. We also should be asking them to support amendments to strengthen the bill, including the Poe-Lofgren amendment and H.R. 1466.
