I would like to know the motivation behind Ralph D’Antonio’s April 30 letter to the editor concerning city treasurer Jeff Smith. Did D’Antonio, a former city treasurer, write his letter because he is unhappy with Smith’s success in elevating the position of city treasurer from someone to who simply signed checks and balanced ledgers to a being a key member of the city’s decision-making team?

Is D’Antonio upset that Smith’s legacy will be that he helped increase city revenues by nearly $1 million without an tax increase? The legacy left by D’Antonio is that he was the city treasurer who walked out on the city, quitting his job in the middle of his term.

Maybe the reason behind D’Antonio’s letter is to simply help the candidate for county commissioner who has a sign in front of his house.

As mayor, I am grateful for Smith’s efforts and success as our city treasurer during the past three years. Our next city treasurer will have some big shoes to fill.
