BUTLER TWP — Butler senior sprinter Robert Burdine didn't want to miss another chance to help the Golden Tornado.

Burdine missed the WPIAL Class AAA team track semifinals last season with a pulled hamstring.

He made sure that he was in peak condition for this year's team playoffs.

Burdine won the 100 and 200 meter dashes and was a member of the winning 400 and 1,600 relays to help Butler beat Mt. Lebanon (86-64) and Knoch (103-47) Tuesday at Art Bernardi Stadium.

The Golden Tornado earned their first trip to the WPIAL finals since 2010.

On the girls' side, the Blue Devils advanced with wins over the Golden Tornado (83.5-66.5) and Knights (106-44).

The finals will be held next Monday at Baldwin High School.

“We were expecting to win so we could go to the championship,” Burdine said. “This year, I made sure I could be healthy and help my team get to the championship.”

Butler coach Rick Schontz looks forward to seeing how his team matches up. The Golden Tornado's only loss this season was to North Allegheny.

The meet finished tied at 75 and the Tigers won because they finished with a 10-8 advantage in first-place finishes.

“It gave us a huge confidence boost,” Burdine said. “For the sprints, NA only got four points out of 37. We really made sure we kept working hard and doing our job in the sprints.”

Schontz knows his kids are eager for another shot at North Allegheny.

The Tigers also advanced to the finals.

“They've been kind of like 'Hey, we want a rematch,'” Schontz said. “That was a big part of these last three meets. We want a rematch and can beat this team.”

The Golden Tornado got points in a variety of ways. Butler swept the 100-meter dash, shot put and pole vault against the Blue Devils.

Butler's Jackson Williams threw 148 feet, 1 inch on his last javelin throw to win the event.

“Jackson came up and did what he needed to get done,” Schontz said. “It was a big-time pressure throw.”

Williams said he was worried about the team aspect.

“It was. I knew I had to throw big and I did,” Williams said. “I thought it wasn't enough, but when they said 148, it was three feet farther.”

Lake Sankey jumped 41-5 3/4 to win the triple jump and Nikolai Peterson won the pole vault with a leap of 12-0 for the Golden Tornado.

Williams is excited for next week.

“I think we can get (North Allegheny) this time though,” Williams said. “I think we're a lot stronger this year than we were last year. I like our odds.

Knoch's Jordan Geist had the best overall throws in the shot put (59-8 3/4) and discus (172-2).

On the girls' side, Kalynn Callihan and Emily Horstman were both double winners for Butler.

Callihan won the shot put and discus, while Horstman won the 100 and 200 runs.

Butler's Julia Baxter had the best high jump (5-2)and Claire Weiland the best pole vault (9-6).

Knoch's Katie Bozzo had the best time in the 300 hurdles (46.3), while her teammate Mackenzie Rodgers was tops in the javelin (108-3).
