Beach event claims record

Bantam festival may take it back

BUTLER — There’s a new world record holder for the most Jeeps assembled in the same place at once which means that title no longer belongs to Butler.

The event Jeep Beach in Daytona, Fla., broke the record Sunday when the group assembled 1,846 Jeeps during the organization’s annual festival.

That event, which is organized by the Mid-Florida Jeep Club, is in its 12th year.

The number of Jeeps in Daytona, which was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records group at the event, bested the old record of 1,106 Jeeps set by the 2011 Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival in Butler.

But Heritage Festival organizers expect the record won’t stand for long.

“It wasn’t unexpected,” said festival organizer Patti Jo Lambert. “Now we know what we need to do here to beat that record.”

Lambert said registration will continue until May 17 for the Jeep Invasion, which is a parade through downtown Butler on the opening night of the festival.

The Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival will be June 12-14 in Butler and at Cooper’s Lake Campground.

Lambert stressed that any model of Jeep is eligible for the parade and urged anyone who’s been thinking of participating to register.

“As long as it says Jeep, it counts,” she said of the parade. “We can’t let the beach (Daytona) beat the birthplace (Butler).”

Cathal Duffy, an organizer of the Jeep Beach event, said he’s excited that the group now holds the world record.

It took more than six months of planning to pull off the feat, he said, and he realizes the record might not stand for long.

“We’re actually encouraging them,” Duffy said. “If they break our record, we’ll be back next year to try to break it again. I think there will be a nice back-and-forth between us for the future.”
