SRU baseball 7th in Atlantic Region

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University baseball team is ranked seventh in the initial Atlantic Region rankings.

The top six teams in the region as of May 10 will qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

SRU is 25-16 overall this year with four regular season games remaining. The Rock hosts Pitt-Johnstown at 1 p.m. today at Critchfield Park and needs one win over UPJ this weekend to clinch a PSAC Tournament berth.

SV grad Helisek joins Wild Things

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Seneca Valley graduate Kyle Helisek has signed with the Frontier League’s Washington Wild Things after spending three years as a pitcher in the St. Louis Cardinals system.

Helisek was drafted in the 30th round by the Cardinals in 2012 and made the Florida State League All-Star Game last year. Helisek made 56 starts in the minor leagues, compiling an 18-16 record with a 3.61 earned run average. He had 201 strikeouts in 306.1 innings. He pitched for four years at Villanova University, earning 11 wins and a save in 55 games, including 46 starts.

The Wild Things open their 14th season at 7:05 p.m. May 15 against Schaumburg.

Nittany Lion coaches coming to Cranberry

CRANBERRY TWP— Penn State head football coach James Franklin, athletic director Sandy Barbour and other Nittany Lion head coaches will be part of a Penn State Coaches Caravan stop May 7 at the Doubletree by Hilton Cranberry.

The reception and program will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Space is limited, so advance registration is suggested. To register, visit www.alumni.psu.edu/coachescaravan.

Walk-ins will be accepted on a space-available basis only, with an additional $10 registration fee per person.
