SR Elementary will receive $1K grant

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock Elementary School will receive a $1,000 physical education grant from Pittsburgh Three Rivers Marathon.

The school is one of five to receive a grant, which was determined by a drawing. The grant will provide extra funding for gym equipment and other items to improve students’ physical fitness.

The school was in competition for the grant by participating in the Kids of STEEL program, which encourages children to try healthier foods and to run a combined total of 26.2 miles over the course of four months.

Katie Pavlich, Marathon event program director, said the grants help ease the budget cuts hindering some schools.

The school will be recognized May 2 at the Toyota of Pittsburgh Kids Marathon.

Jeep scholarship honors volunteer

BUTLER TWP — The Education Foundation at Butler County Community College has a new scholarship for GED graduates planning to attend BC3.

The Sharon L. Kovac Bantam Jeep Heritage Scholarship was made possible by the contributions of Kovac’s family, friends, and the Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival Community.

Kovac, who died in October, loved her 2001 Jeep Wrangler. She enjoyed serving as a volunteer for the Jeep festival, which is celebrated each June in Butler County.

Her husband Wayne Kovac said, “Butler County Community College is an incredible place to honor the legacy of a wonderful woman. Sharon’s scholarship will provide a quality education, build a solid foundation for the future, and make a positive impact on many students’ lives.”

To apply, visit bc3.edu through July 1 or call the BC3 Education Foundation to learn more at 724-287-8711, Ext. 8368.
