Bicyclist not the hazard

Regarding the letter by Kathryn Rozie of Jackson Township (“Bicyclist a hazard,” March 22). I no doubt believe what the writer described is true and dangerous to all parties involved. Conversely, the hazard is the result of increased traffic and decreased options.

I am an avid bicyclist and to me one of the greatest attributes of living in the Harmony and Zelienople area my entire life was the ability to bike on relatively rural and low volume roads mostly in Jackson Township.

That attribute has eroded dramatically over the past few years with the seemingly cavalier and unmonitored construction and natural gas development. According to the local paper there is a lot more forthcoming.

Our roads are in deplorable condition. This is a dilemma and increased risk to everyone, not just cyclists.

This inconvenience isn’t going to go away and I doubt there is little to stop it. Our comforts and welfare have been jeopardized and adversely affected.

Our quality of life has been impacted negatively and it will continue until the dust settles. A few developers will make their fortune and move along to the next small town.

It would be nice if these big businesses, residential developers, and natural gas companies would contribute to the creation of walking and jogging paths, a bike trail, assisting struggling community parks, and help preserve our creekside instead of contributing to its demise. The machinery and manpower are already here.

It should be enforced law that roads are capable of handling volume before, not after the fact.

The bicyclist should refrain from riding his bike during bus times but it is his right and our locality has been tread on.
