Slippery Rock track takes CV Invite

The Slippery Rock High School boys track and field team won the Central Valley Invitational Saturday afternoon in center.

The Rockets won the last event, with Shane Kirkwood, Nate Popejoy, Gunner Coleman and Brady Kadlubek teaming up to win the 1,600 relay with a time of 3 minutes, 38.1 seconds.

Other first-place winners for the Rockets included: Fred Urbaniak, 110 hurdles, 15.29 seconds; Coleman, 300 hurdles, 44.91 and the 3,200 relay team — which consisted of Coleman, Mark Cessar, Josh Jones — that finished in 8:23.03.

Andrew Maxwell also placed third for Slippery Rock in the 3,200 (10:22.85).

On the girls’ side, Slippery Rock placed third. Megan Stephen (100 dash, 12.79) and Hannah Roth (400, 1:05.13) both picked up first-place finishes.

The Rockets’ 400 relay team — which consisted of Brady Dalton, Molly Joyce, Roth and Stephenson — finished second in 52.96 seconds.

Butler at TSTCA Outdoor Championship — Julia Baxter won the high jump with a leap of five feet, two inches at the Tri State Track Coaches Association Outdoor Championships in West Mifflin.

Kalynn Callihan took third in the shot put and placed eighth in the discus for the Golden Tornado.

Other Butler placers were Maggie Welty (fifth in 3,200 meters, sixth in 1,600), Emily Horstman (eighth in 400) and Michaela Brydon (eighth in 3,200).

Butler’s 4x800 relay team of Erin Lemay, Emma Lemay, Shanah Hoy and Odile Enslen placed sixth. The 4x400 relay of Enslen, Kelly Kanay, Maddie Tonini and Horstman was also sixth while the 4x100 relay unit of Maddie Glew, Sarah Koch, Savannah Miller and Horstman placed eighth.

Butler’s girls also attended the Indiana 9th/10th Grade Invitational recentlty. Taylor Weaver won the pole vault for the Tornado and the 4x100 relay unit of Glew, Koch, Weaver and Jessica Bishop claimed first place.

Union New Castle Invitational — Moniteau’s girls track team placed third behind a strong performance from Maura Kimmel.

Kimmel, who was named the Most Valuable Player in the field events, finished first in the discus (125 feet, 6 inches) and shot put (36-0 1/4).

Megan Sosigian won the javelin (105-3), while Gabby Stewart finished first in the 200 dash (27.5) for the Warriors.

Baseball

Knoch 10, Valley 0 — The Knights immproved to 4-1 overall, 2-1 in section play, with this Saturday morning victory at Kelly Automotive Park.

Softball

Cheyenne Hindman struck out seven batters and drove in a run to help Slippery Rock beat New Castle 4-2 in a non-region road game.

Alexis Vogan also drove in a run for the Rockets (4-0).

Grove City dropped a pair of region matches by identical 4-1 scores to Hickory and Greenville.

Ryan Motta picked up wins for the Eagles (3-2, 1-2) at No. 2 singles in both matches.
