Butler needs bypass

Regarding the letter by Scott Kerr (“Quiet the big rigs,” March 23).

I agree with the writer. Restricting big-rig noise by prohibiting “Jake braking” through Butler is a start. But as the writer also mentioned, what is badly needed is a true bypass around Butler.

Big rigs, some with oversize loads, routinely roll through Butler because there is no bypass for them. Most semi and tri-axle drivers operate responsibly through Butler, but given their size and weight it’s possible a tragedy could occur.

Besides safety, a beltway around Butler could also alleviate traffic backups on Main Street.

A beltway or spur is also needed around Evans City and Zelienople as well.

Most of the traffic coming through Butler does not stop at any of the businesses on Main Street. Most drivers come through town only because they are trying to get somewhere else. Certainly no truck drivers stop to shop.
