Wyllie to pull double duty

GROVE CITY — In the University of Mount Union volleyball locker room hangs a list of team records.

Jordyn Wyllie peered at the leaderboard on a recent visit to the school, studying the kills mark with particular interest.

That record of 1,604 belongs to the Purple Raiders’ recently hired volleyball coach, Melissa Mahnke.

The coach caught Wyllie, a Grove City High senior, in mid-gaze at the list.

“Are you eyeing up my record?” Mahnke joked.

Wyllie simply said, “Yes.”

Wyllie has her sights set on more than just volleyball records at Mount Union. She will also play basketball at the Alliance, Ohio school.

It was the notion of playing two sports in college that was part of the reason why Wyllie de-committed from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and chose Mount Union instead.

It was by no means easy.

But it was a decision Wyllie strongly felt she needed to make.

“After my overnight (stay) at IUP, I felt that wasn’t the place for me,” Wyllie said. “You really get a feel for a campus when you have an overnight and I just didn’t feel like it was a good fit for me.

“It doesn’t matter how many sweatshirts I have from IUP,” Wyllie added, “it wasn’t enough to keep me there.”

Mount Union, though, is a perfect fit, Wyllie said.

The 5-foot-11 standout on both the volleyball and basketball courts for Grove City, decided she found the opportunity she was looking for at Mount Union.

“I just couldn’t see myself not playing basketball anymore,” Wyllie said.

Mount Union also offered her a rare academic opportunity.

Wyllie will major in secondary and special education. But an unusual minor offered by the school piqued her interest even more.

“They asked me if I wanted to go into coaching,” Wyllie said. “I said, ‘Heck yeah.’ Then they said, ‘You know, we have a minor in coaching.’ I was like, ‘No way.’”

Wyllie already has gotten a fair share of coaching experience.

For the last two years she has helped coach the Grove City middle school volleyball team.

Grove City girls basketball coach T.L. Eller said Wyllie has an unquestioned work ethic.

“She leads by example,” Eller said. “She’s always at our open gyms and team camps and tournaments in the offseason. She rarely misses anything we do as a team and finds extra time to work out with me individually.”

That work paid off in her senior season. Wyllie averaged 13 points and five rebounds per game while shooting 70 percent from the free throw line this year.

“I was a senior and I felt like I had to lead my team on the court,” Wyllie said. “I had to step up in a big way.”

Wyllie was named the MVP at the District 10 North-South All-Star Game over the weekend.

“I was so humbled by that,” Wyllie said. “There were other girls who deserved it. The trophy was as big as my head.”

Wyllie has always been a force on the volleyball court, averaging double-digit kills and being a terror at the net.

She’s hoping to be the same dual-sport star at Mount Union.

“I have a lot of work to do this summer,” said Wyllie, who had to give up throwing and jumping for the Grove City track and field team to play club volleyball and coach this spring. “It’s not going to be a walk in the park. But I don’t want it to be. I’m looking for a challenge and Mount Union has that.”
