PITTSBURGH — The second egg in the bald eagle nest in the Hays neighborhood broke Friday.

The parenting eagles have been at the nest along the Monongahela River for the past three years. A live stream of the nest is online through the Murrysville-based PixController, which is working with the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania.

That online view of the nest can be seen at the Butler Eagle website.

Bill Powers, president of PixController, said the egg appeared to crack early Friday morning, but there was no sign of a hatchling.

Biologist, bird experts, and eagle cam viewers watched throughout the day for any sign of a baby eagle.

The mother eagle temporarily left the nest about 8 p.m. Friday, allowing PixController to confirm the egg was not viable.

The first of the two eggs produced this year also broke earlier this month.

Last year, the birds successfully raised three young from as many eggs — an unusually good outcome for bald eagle nesting.
