Flooding hits section of Rt. 19 today

Flooding from rain and melting snow shut down both the turning lane and the right lane on Route 19 Wednesday morning near Cranberry's border with Marshall Township in Allegheny County.

MARSHALL TWP — A drain on the shoulder of northbound Route 19 clogged this morning, shutting down the turning lane and right-hand lane as water inundated the road.

Crews with the state Department of Transportation closed down those lanes early today, although traffic was still able to pass by in the left lane.

The flooding, a result of rapidly melting snow and significant rainfall, occurred in front of the Bob Evans restaurant along the northbound side of Route 19. That is just over the border from Cranberry Township in Allegheny County.

Steve Cowan, a spokesman for PennDOT, said Wednesday his agency wasn’t completely sure why the drain clogged, but added crews are working diligently to rectify the road.

“Once they’re able to pull up the water and locate the inlet box (drain), they’ll be able to determine what the problem is and how to rectify it,” Cowan said.

Cranberry Township manager Jerry Andree said there are areas in the township that are experiencing minor flooding.

“What we’re seeing is a lot of melting off and our catch basins along the roads are clogged with snow and ice,” Andree said. “It’s a problem we’re experiencing area-wide.”
