Fire causes minor damage at AK Steel

BUTLER TWP — A small fire occurred this morning at the AK Steel plant on Armco Drive.

The fire was reported about 3:20 a.m.

Barry Racey, a spokesman for AK Steel, said the fire started on an anneal and pickle line where steel is treated and cleaned.

“A minor fire occurred early this morning at one of the operating units at our Butler Works,” he said in an e-mail. “The fire was quickly extinguished. There was only minor damage, and there is no impact to operations.”

Racey added there were no injuries resulting from the incident.

Firefighters from Butler Township Fire District 3, South Butler, Mercer Road and the city were called to assist but were there for less than 30 minutes, according to 911 reports.
