Butler County state Reps. vote for liquor, wine bill

HARRISBURG — Four of the five state House members who represent Butler County voted Wednesday to privatize much of the state-controlled wine and liquor store system.

It is the second time in two years, the Pennsylvania House passed such a proposal.

State Reps. Ted Nesbit, Brian Ellis, Daryl Metcalfe and Lee James, all Republicans, voted for the bill.

Democrat Rep. Jard Gibbons voted no.

The proposal, which would also liberalize beer sales laws, passed the Republican-controlled chamber, 114 to 87, over the objection of every Democrat and a few Republicans.

Senate leaders have been noncommittal about the measure, and it faces a veto by Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf, who favors keeping the state system and trying to make it more profitable.

A similar bill passed the House two years ago, but it died in the Senate, despite support from then-Gov. Tom Corbett, a Republican.
