Rock women get close to PSAC tourney

The Slippery Rock University women’s basketball team has a simple path to the postseason.

After a 77-71 overtime PSAC West Division win over Clarion University at Tippin Gymnasium Saturday, The Rock’s playoff road is clear.

Beat California University Wednesday and The Rock is in. Lose and hope Edinboro can beat Pitt-Johnstown.

SRU (11-14, 7-14) has won four of its last six games and has the program’s most wins in the past nine season. The Rock had to overcome a 43-34 halftime deficit before rallying to beat the Golden Eagles.

D’Asia Chambers (27 points, 11 rebounds) and Megan Hardiman (11, 10) both recorded double-doubles for SRU.

Men’s basketball

The Butler County Community College team was eliminated in the NJCAA Region 30 Division III playoffs by top-seeded Prince George (Wash.) Community College, 112-103.

The Pioneers (14-15) trailed 55-36, but rallied to cut the lead to 105-103 with two minutes remaining.

Alex Alvarez (40 points, 18 rebounds), Austin Miller (25, 10) and Dom Pusateri (19, 10 assists) all had double-doubles for BC3.

Clarion 72, SRU 70 — Kyheim Hall made two free throws with 33 seconds remaining to help the Golden Eagles cap a 10-2 run to knock off the Rock at Tippin Gymnasium.

Chaquille Pratt led The Rock (18-9, 13-8) with 27 points and 12 rebounds.

The Rock slipped to 5-7 on the road this season. Saturday’s loss may prove costly in SRU’s hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Division II Tournament this year.
