Pa. bear harvest ranks 7th

HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Game Commission has reported the final bear harvest total for 2014 at 3,366, making it the seventh-highest tally in state history.

The state’s all-time high is 4,350 bears taken in 2011. Pennsylvania’s seven highest bear totals have occurred within the last 10 years.

Jeff McClymonds of Slippery Rock bagged a 598-pound bear in Muddy Creek Township, the fourth largest taken in the state last year. The heaviest bear taken weighed 677 pounds and was harvested in Pittsfield Township, Warren County.

There were 28 bears harvested in Butler County last year, compared to 24 in 2013. Warren County led the Northwest Region with 100 bears harvested.
