Police respond to report of shot

PROSPECT — State police responded to a reported gunshot fired near the Prospect Corner Store on Main Street Friday evening.

The call came in at about 5:20 p.m., according to 911 reports.

When police arrived, there was no one there and there was no sign of injury.

The investigation is continuing and police have released no additional information on the incident.

The owner of the store declined to comment.

Borough councilman David Stellfox said he was on his way to the grocery store shortly after the incident occurred.

“I was on my way to the store when I noticed four or five squad cars, all state police,” he said. “So naturally I inquired.”

Stellfox said police were interviewing employees in the store when he walked inside.

“I heard there was a single gunshot,” Stellfox said.

He was not aware of any injuries.

Stellfox said he alerted Mayor James Butler of the incident.

Butler, who as mayor oversees the borough’s part-time police department, said he knows little about what happened.

The mayor said shootings are unheard of in the borough.

“I’ve lived in Prospect since 1988 and this is the first that I’m aware of,” he said.

Stellfox agreed, saying that the crime rates in Prospect are pretty low.

“We may have an occasional break-in or something,” he said. “But a shooting — those don’t happen.”

Keri Raisley Hays, the director of the Edward L. Raisley Funeral Home across the street from the store, said business was usual Friday evening and that she knew little about the incident.

However, she said she was sad to hear of a potential shooting.

“Never thought this would happen in our small, quaint town of Prospect,” she said.
