Serving the public

In response to Brenda Henwood’s letter (“Prayer support,” Jan. 27) regarding Middlesex Township supervisors Mike Spreng, Don Marshall and Jim Evans.

The writer liberally praises the three men as “leaders who are liked and whom we elected to help us feel safe in our community.”

They were elected to serve the community; but their actions suggest they serve the interests of Rex Energy. People who have taken the time to learn about the dangers of fracking know the process is dangerous to our health, our environment and — especially — to the development of our children.

Why do these men go out of their way to permit Rex Energy to frack close to Mars Area schools? Why do these men discount the large body of evidence showing fracking is dangerous?

The writer asks us to pray for these men and the township. Fine. She also needs to ask them the questions I raised in the last paragraph and to insist that they give her honest answers.

Pope Francis — no liberal tree hugger — recently stated that fracking is a sin against the earth. Perhaps these supervisors need to reflect on the pope’s message and act accordingly.
