Ice rink foundation poured at hockey facility

CRANBERRY TWP — Construction crews Friday poured the concrete base for the first of two ice rinks that will be in the new UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex.

The facility, which is under construction on the north side of Route 228 near Interstate 79 in Cranberry Township, is slated to open in August.

Chuck Finder, a spokesman for UPMC, said that dozens of workers poured 587 tons of concrete for the foundation.

The work required eight hours of non-stop pouring and setting. The foundation includes a six-inch layer of concrete on the 80x200-foot rink, concrete that must be made completely flat within a fraction of an inch.

Finder said that it will take 28 days for the concrete to fully settle, while the foundation of the next rink is slated to be poured in February.

The facility will have two ice rinks that will be used by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The public will be able to watch practices and will be able to use the ice during open-skate times.

It also will contain medical offices for UPMC.
