Mars man charged in crash that killed 80-year-old

EVANS CITY — A Mars man was arraigned this morning on charges of vehicular homicide while driving under the influence after an accident nearly a month ago that killed an elderly man.

Adams Township Police on Wednesday brought charges against John George Turcic, 62, of Mars. The charges include homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence, driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, careless driving and reckless driving.

He was arraigned by District Judge Wayne Seibel.

Turcic, who turned himself in this morning, is free on $15,000 unsecured bail. His preliminary hearing in Butler is Jan. 27.

The charges stem from an accident on Dec. 10 in the Adams Shoppes off Route 228 just outside of Cranberry Township.

According to court documents, Turcic had drunk a “fair-sized” glass of vodka before driving to Giant Eagle to refill a prescription.

However, he cut through the parking lot in front of the Andora restaurant and hit William Kvindis, 80, of Mars, who was walking with his girlfriend to a hair salon.

Court documents estimate Turcic was driving about 25 mph when he hit Kvindis.

Medics took Kvindis to a Pittsburgh hospital via a helicopter. He died several hours later of severe head injuries.
