Getting their rep back

Damsels show improvement

RIMERSBURG — Lexey Shick looks at the Union girls basketball team's 3-6 record and doesn't feel it represents the Damsels progress.

The sophomore point guard believes Union is back on the right path after it suffered through a 1-21 finish last season, the worst in program history.

The Damsels are 16-59 since they went 22-5 and won the KSAC South title and made the PIAA Tournament in 2011-12.

Union has 25 PIAA appearances in its history.

“Our record doesn't show it, but we're bringing Union basketball back,” Shick said. “Our coaches are proud of us, even if we lose. We don't give up. We push through to the end of the game.”

First-year Damsels head coach Lacey Magagnotti challenged her players by traveling to several basketball camps over the summer.

“I think our attitude is getting better,” Magagnotti said. “Our girls are believing they can play against anyone.”

The focus was limiting turnovers that stunted Union's offense last season.

The Damsels lost their top three scorers from an offense that only scored 700 points and didn't have any player average more than 7 points per game.

Shick has been the key in injecting life in Union's offense.

She's averaging 15.9 points per game and has scored over 20 points in four games.

Shick scored a career-high 26 points in the Damsels' season-opening win over Lakeview.

“Last year was a tough season for us,” said Shick, who averaged 2.7 points per game as a freshman. “We struggled a lot with scoring. I think mentally we've gotten a lot smarter this year. We aren't turning it over as much.”

In the past four game, Shick has found outside range, making nine 3-pointers after not making any in the first five games.

“I think she's responded great after the first couple games,” Magagnotti said. “We told her she needs to score more and take the ball to the hole. She's a phenomenal point guard and needed somebody to tell her to score more. She was worried about being a ballhog.”

The Damsels has another threat in Shaley Shick, who is averaging around 10 points per game.

Union started the season 2-1 and have hit a rough patch since. Union led KSAC foes Redbank Valley and Clarion, which made the conference title game in the fourth quarter before losing.

It's part of the process, according to Magagnotti.

“I think we've been doing a great job of it so far. Having difficulty winning in the fourth quarter,” Magagnotti said. “We haven't been able to pull through. We're still learning how to win.”

Lexey Shick is pleased with the team's progress. Now, she wants to continue on the track of restoring the Damsels glory years.

“I wanted to start winning games and wanted to prove we can do it and not be a team that loses every game,” she said. “ We want to make our community and school proud and have people come watch us play.”
