Humane society pledges placements

Municipalities with contracts guaranteed help

The Butler County Humane Society wants to get the word out to municipalities that stray dogs and cats are welcome at its Evans City Road shelter.

Marci Mustello, Humane Society board president, said if a municipality signs an annual agreement with the society, strays are guaranteed to be found a place to stay.

“We are the resource to take in stray animals,” Mustello said.

Under a contract, a municipality pays the Humane Society a $45 fee for animals that are more than 12 weeks old. Younger puppies and kittens are $40 each.

Mustello said even if the shelter is filled to capacity, it will find somewhere else for a stray to stay.

“We’ll find another place to take them,” she said.

Michele Allen, executive director of the Humane Society, said the shelter currently has 27 dogs, but can hold up to 50.

Cats are filling every nook and cranny, though. The shelter has 96 felines.

“We do have an explosion of cats,” Allen said.

For 2014, 30 county municipalities had contracts with the humane society.

The nonprofit organization works with municipal dog officers and the state dog warden.

The Butler Council of Governments is working with the humane society to spread the word about the municipal contracts.

Jeff Smith, COG executive director, said the idea is to inform local municipalities about the advantages of signing the contract.

“I’m excited about this partnership with the Butler County Humane Society because I believe it will give the COG the opportunity to demonstrate the value and benefits of countywide cooperation to the public,” Smith said.

The COG also is helping the humane society pursue corporate grant funding to develop a countywide program to catch, spay and release feral cats.

The animal rescue organization previously had a smaller version of such a program with the city.
