Hobnob keeps energy up for annual classic

Dickens' 'Carol' ends Sunday

BUTLER TWP — The Hobnob Theatre Co. reprises its annual Christmas offering with “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, continuing Saturday and Sunday at Butler County Community College under the direction of Liz Smith and Jim Lilley.

Several new actors took the stage. Ebenezer Scrooge was played by Thom Hilliard, who did a commendable job at capturing the crotchety curmudgeon. His approach was delightful and the audience responded.

Hilliard confidently balanced the role with a mixture of comedy and drama producing a believable Scrooge.

Chelsea Bartel, a newcomer to the Hobnob stage, portrayed Christmas Present. The fabulously coiffed and costumed spirit moved the audience as she compellingly walked Scrooge through the holiday. Her presence at the party at Fred’s House was amusing.

From Ghost of Christmas Past last year to Belle this year, Julia Singleton shone in the role of Scrooge’s young love. Her passionate speech in act one as she lets young Scrooge, Jake Kryiazis, out of their engagement was convincing and moving. Their chemistry in that scene was spot on.

Several actors reprised their roles with great aplomb, Bob Cratchit was again played by Aaron Paul Zimmerman, who seemed to kick it up a notch with his interpretation of the character. It would seem having played the role before gave him a confidence this year that produced a better Cratchit.

The same can be said of his wife, Mrs. Cratchit played by Sarah McAllister who truly amped up her role. She seemed much more at ease on stage this year and much into character as she doted on her children and her husband but also showed some vehemence toward the mention of Ebenezer. Her portrayal this year was much more realistic.

Bob Meals also reprised Jacob Marley and seemed to be more polished now.

Kevin Lukacs and Karen Justi were simply lovely in the roles of Fred and wife. Justi’s comedic nature lends well to this fun role, and Lukacs energy makes this role a perfect one for him. Their chemistry was credible and they were just a joy at the party.

Kara Whitmire and Justin Lilly also played the party scene quite well as Jane and Topper. Lilly’s comical chase and Whitmire’s coyness was an entertaining sideshow.

The Fezziwigs were also a fun asset to the show, played by Stephen Fogle and Stephanie Kobil.

A large cast of other talented individuals combined to make for a flawless opening night.

The musically talented duo of Stephanie Franzen on fiddle and Alison Carey on piano contributed to the production.

As always with this show, the costumes were beautiful and the children adorable. Even if you’ve seen the show before, it’s an excellent way to get into the spirit of the season.

All in all, it’s an affordable and enjoyable evening of theater for the whole family.
