Motorist in crash that killed officer dies

PITTSBURGH — Authorities say the man involved in a crash that killed a Western Pennsylvania police officer almost a week ago has died.

The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office says 59-year-old Andrew Bohatch of Uniontown was pronounced dead shortly after 4 p.m. Friday at UPMC Presbyterian hospital.

Officials in Fayette County said Bohatch was taken to the hospital with major injuries after Sunday’s crash on Route 51 in Perry.

Police said his SUV turned into the path of 35-year-old Officer Richard Champion, who had his lights and sirens on and was trying to catch up to a speeding motorist.

Emergency responders, fellow Army reservists and law enforcement officials paid to the part-time Perryopolis officer at a funeral service Friday in his hometown of Ligonier..
