Man dies on icy I-79

Tractor-trailer overturns

WORTH TWP — A West Virginia man died Thursday night when his tractor-trailer overturned on Interstate 79.

The accident occurred just after 11 p.m. near mile-marker 102 of the highway’s northbound lanes.

State police said Robert Chafin, 51, of Weirton, W.Va., was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said icy conditions caused Chafin to lose control of his rig around a bend in the road. The truck left the road and crashed into the center median, rolling over twice before stopping.

The tractor-trailer has major damage, police said.

Chafin, who was thrown from the vehicle, was not breathing at the scene, according to 911 reports.

The Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Department and Slippery Rock EMS assisted at the scene. Crews were cleared by 2 a.m.

Fire Chief Dave Taggart could not be reached for comment this morning.

There were four other accidents reported on I-79 after 10:30 p.m., but state police said this morning there were no serious injuries in those accidents.

Two cars were in an accident in the southbound lanes near mile marker 102 about 10:30 p.m.

Just before 11 p.m. a vehicle slid into the guard rail along the northbound lane near mile-marker 104.

Another vehicle driving north crashed into the center median about 11:45 p.m. near mile-marker 91.

Two tractor trailers were involved in a crash near mile-marker 94 on the northbound lanes about 12:35 a.m. Neither driver was injured.

Police this morning did not have reports on those accidents available.
