Icy roads result in accidents

This morning’s slick roads caused several accidents across Butler County and led to the delayed start of classes in some districts.

Route 68 was closed at the Kriess Road intersection after a several-vehicle wreck occurred around 6:15 a.m.

According to county 911 records, one person had a minor injury.

An overturned vehicle on Route 422 in Clearfield Township was reported in a 3 a.m. 911 call. There were only minor injuries.

A 6:27 a.m. 911 call reported a vehicle hitting a sign along North Boundary Road in Cranberry Township.

Accidents on Brownshill Road in Middlesex Township and Ehrman Road in Cranberry Township involved vehicles sliding into ditches.

At 5:39 a.m., a vehicle was reported stuck on the railroad tracks on Butler Street in Valencia.

Another wreck occurred along Freeport Road in Summit Township, which was reported in a 4:56 a.m. 911 call.

An overturned tractor trailer was blocking traffic lanes and causing issues for drivers on Interstate 79 north near Wexford this morning. There was no report of injuries.

The slick roads that greeted motorists this morning were caused by a light freezing drizzle.

The conditions caused the National Weather Service to issue a winter weather advisory overnight that expired at 9 a.m.

Meteorologist Lee Hendricks said the precipitation was expected to stop this afternoon and not return until Tuesday, when it is likely to rain.

The Freeport, Karns City, Mars, Moniteau, Seneca Valley, Slippery Rock and South Butler school districts operated under a two-hour delayed start of classes.

Also starting two hours late today were Penn Christian, St. Killian’s, St. Luke’s, Portersville Christian, Holy Sepulcher and Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic.

Eagle staff writers Tom Victoria and John Bojarski contributed to this report.
