'Don't excuse it'

I read with interest the report about the woman suing the Mars School District (“Parent sues Mars,” Dec. 12, Page 1) because she claims that her son was mistreated by the principal and others. The report states that her son was diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder.

I had never heard of that disease so I looked it up on the Mayo Clinic’s web site. I encourage everyone else to do the same, and then please, someone, explain to me what society’s responsibility is towards this child.

To quote the Mayo Clinic: “Stressful changes that disrupt a child’s sense of consistency — such as divorce or changing child care — increase the risk of disruptive behavior. However, though these changes may help explain disrespectful or oppositional behavior, they don’t excuse it.” (Emphasis mine.)

I hope the judicial system sees this lawsuit for what it is and rules in favor of the Mars School District.
