IRVING, Texas — NFL rushing leader DeMarco Murray has a broken left hand in what could be a damaging blow to the playoff hopes of the Dallas Cowboys.

Murray was set for surgery Monday and might be sidelined Sunday at home against Indianapolis, already a playoff qualifier. Even though the Cowboys just beat Philadelphia to take the NFC East lead, they might have to win both of their remaining games to end a four-year postseason drought.

MINNEAPOLIS — The NFL Players Association filed a federal lawsuit for Adrian Peterson, asking the court to dismiss an arbitration ruling that upheld the NFL's suspension of the star running back.The petition also requested a court order for Peterson's immediate reinstatement, arguing that Peterson has served far more than what's allowed by the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players.

NEW YORK — Chase Headley is staying with the Yankees, agreeing to a $52 million, four-year contract that signals New York is not counting on Alex Rodriguez to play third base regularly.

CHICAGO — The White Sox finalized a $42 million, three-year contract with free agent Melky Cabrera, bolstering their outfield with their latest big move in an impressive offseason.Cabrera will make $13 million in 2015, $14 million in 2016 and $15 million in the final season of the contract, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal. The 30-year-old left fielder, who hit .301 with 16 homers and 73 RBIs in 139 games with Toronto last season.

EDMONTON, Alberta — Dallas Eakins was fired as coach of the Edmonton Oilers, who have lost 15 of 16 games and are well on the way to missing the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season.
