BUTLER TWP — The numbers were crazy.

42 field goals to 14. 65 rebounds to 29. Three players off the bench scoring in double figures.

Butler's 104-62 boys basketball domination of Vincentian Academy Saturday night — the first time the Golden Tornado hit the century mark in years — was expected by no one.

“When you play as a team, good things just happen,” Butler coach Matt Clement said. “There are no individual egos in that locker room.”

That showed on the court during the Butler Tip-Off Tournament championship game.

Thirteen Butler players scored and 13 different players rebounded. At least eight had assists. The Tornado trailed 2-0, scored the next seven points and kept adding to the lead.

They outscored the Royals 32-12 in the final quarter and scored 61 points in the second half.

“Scoring 100 was exciting, but I like the way we defended,” Clement said. “Holding a team like that to 62 points was quite an accomplishment. They beat us in the finals here last year with their offense (91-85).

“Since the fall, there's been a different feel to this team. I know it's early and it's only been two games ... but things are different.”

Vincentian averaged 90.5 points per game last year, becoming the first WPIAL team to average 90 for an entire season since Blackhawk in 1992. The Royals scored 100 in an overtime win over Kennedy Catholic to open the Butler tournament Friday night.

They were held to as few as 62 points for the first time since March 13, 2012 — a span of 57 games.

Vincentian, a Class A power that has won 73 of its past 84 games, played without two of its top seven players, including returning double-digit scorer Jay Cortese.

“They're two of our bigger players physically and we missed them tonight,” Royals coach George Yokitis said. “They clobbered us on the boards. Still, you don't expect to lose by 40.

“Take nothing away from Butler. They were tremendous tonight. We could have had Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson on the floor. It wouldn't have mattered.

“They wore us out. we couldn't stay with them. They beat us at our own game,” Yokitis added.

Justice Lewandowski and Andrew Paterno made the all-tournament team for Butler. Lewandowski scored 19 points for the second straight night. Paterno scored 14 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and had five assists.

“It's all about winning,” Paterno said. “One guy might score 20 points one game and none the next. As long as we win, none of that matters.

“Who scores the points, who gets the minutes, who cares? We're a team. We stick together and play together.”

Eric Hindman had 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Tornado. Damien Pickett added 12 points, Kelley Kuharic 10 points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench.

The teams combined to commit 55 personal fouls.“Hindman came in and gave us some unbelievable minutes tonight,” Clement said. “You can go up and down the roster. Everybody played well.”Ryan Wolf paced Vincentian with 18 points. Jamison Nee had 14 points and six boards, but sank just three of 17 shots from the floor.The Royals sank 32 free throws Saturday and canned 64 of 81 foul shots for the weekend.“We were getting the turnovers at the rate we wanted,” Yokitis said. “But we weren't doing anything with them.”Early in the second quarter, Butler had 10 turnovers to Vincentian's one — but the Tornado had the lead. Butler had 23 turnovers in the game to the Royals' 18.Kennedy Catholic 42, Slippery Rock 41 — The Rockets led the entire second half of the consolation game until Kennedy Catholic's 6-foot-8 center Sagaba Konate sank a 6-footer with 1.1 second left for the win.SR's Jake Whitmer launched a shot from half-court that bounced off the back of the rim as time expired.“Their shot went in. But the Eagles battled back, a Konate lay-up cutting the gap to 41-40 with 38.7 seconds left. Brady Kadlubek missed a pair of free throws with 20.8 seconds to go before Konate sank the game-winner.Slippery Rock sank just 14 of 24 free throws on the night after hitting 12 of 13 Friday.“He was a match-up problem for us all night,” Bushre said of Konate. “We could have fouled him there at the end, but if he sinks them both, we look like idiots.“That was a Catch 22 for us there. We played in this tournament to get better and we definitely got better in the last 24 hours. But their center (Konate) did, too.”Konate had 16 points and 15 rebounds for Kennedy Catholic.
