An 11-year-old Butler boy lit a mattress on fire at his home in the 300 block of West New Castle Street last weekend, authorities said.

Butler police Thursday said they charged the boy in Butler County juvenile court. He is charged with risking a catastrophe.

The fire about 11:20 p.m. Saturday was quickly extinguished and no one was injured.

The boy, who authorities did not identify, used a lighter to ignite the mattress in his bedroom, according to a police report. He and other residents at the home got out safely.

The Butler Fire Department was called and doused the blaze. A fire report was not available and Chief Nick Ban did not immediately return a telephone call this morning.

Police were unavailable for comment this morning.
