Pregnant woman injured in crash

MIDDLESEX TWP — A single-vehicle accident about 2:30 p.m. Thursday, involving a pregnant woman, shut down a section of Route 228 for about five hours.

Fire Chief Dave Metz said an SUV driven by the pregnant woman drove off the road about a half mile west of Route 8 and struck a utility pole before coming to a rest in a field.

The woman, who Metz did not identify, was transported to Butler Memorial Hospital with pain in her neck and back. Metz said he believed the woman’s injuries were minor.

Crews shut down both lanes of Route 228 from Parks Road to Route 8 to replace the West Penn Power utility pole damaged in the accident.

Metz said the SUV snapped the pole in half, but added that no homes in the area lost power.

The Middlesex Police Department is investigating the accident. The department could not be reached for comment this morning.

Units from Richland Township and Adams Area volunteer fire departments assisted at the scene.

Middlesex Township police did not return calls for further information.
