SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University's yearlong celebration marking its 125th anniversary draws to a close in December with a ceremony placing important memorabilia in a Plexiglas time capsule and the reading of the names of the fall semester graduation class.

The event will take place at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 4., placing appropriate remembrance items in a time capsule that when sealed will be placed on permanent display in the Smith Student Center. Memorabilia collected throughout the year will be placed in the capsule.

Members of the SRU Council of Trustees are expected to participate along with students, faculty, staff and members of the local community who joined in the celebration.

GROVE CITY — Olde Town Grove City will hold its fourth annual Olde Town Lights Up the Night from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 6.Businesses will be open throughout the event, and carolers and handbell ringers will play music. Children's activities will take place at the Hub, 145 S. Broad St., from 4 to 6 p.m. Hayrides will leave from Joseph D. Monteleone Youth Festival Park.Other activities will include a crèche display at Grace United Methodist Church and a train exhibit at Tower Presbyterian Church.Performing at the gazebo will be the Grove City Christian Academy Choir form 4:30 to 5 p.m., Cara Udy from 5 to 5:30 p.m. and the Grove City High School Show Choir from 5:30 to 6 p.m.Crowds should go to the gazebo at 6 p.m. for the lighting of the Christmas decorations.Santa will arrive at 6:10 p.m. From 6:15 to 7 p.m., Santa will meet with children at Candy Cane Lane in Burdick's Men's Clothing, 153 S. SLIPPERY ROCK — “The Walk of Shame: The Truth about College Hookups,” a program designed to educate students on different views of college hookups, will be presented at Slippery Rock University at 12:30 p.m. Dec. 3.SRU's Office of Multicultural Development is hosting the event, which will take place in the Smith Student Center Ballroom.Cindy LaCom, SRU professor of English and chairman of the Women's Studies Program, will moderate a student panel, which will explore such issues as the importance of discussing college hookups, the use of birth control and gender issues facing the “hookup culture.”She will moderate the panel and lead the question-and-answer portion of the program.

HARRISVILLE — The Blackwood Theater Organ Society will award several scholarships next year to high school seniors pursuing a college degree in instrumental music performance.Applications must be postmarked no later than Feb. 1.Scholarships ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 will be awarded on the basis of musical talent, recommendations from private and high school music teachers, academic performance, the written essay, motivation and financial need.Applications will be reviewed by a committee and finalists will be required to audition at Heinz Hall on March 8 before a panel of musicians from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.Selected recipients will perform at a recital at the Blackwood Estate in Harrisville in May.For information for the 2015 Blackwood Theatre Organ Society scholarships, visit www.blackwoodmusic.org or contact Ben Robertson at ben@blackwoodmusic.org or by phone at 724-735-2813.

GROVE CITY — The Highmark Foundation has awarded $166,000 to George Junior Republic.The school will use that money to create a Healthy Lifestyle Leadership Program for obese or overweight boys in health education, cardiovascular activities, youth health leadership education, and strength training.That money is part of the $844,000 in grants given to six nonprofit organizations in Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., to support health-related programs in family health, chronic disease, service delivery systems and healthy communities.

The Bach Society will hold its annual Christmas choral concert, “At the Manger,” on Dec. 5 at Center Presbyterian Church, 211 Center St., Slippery Rock and on Dec. 6 at Tower Presbyterian Church, 248 S. Broad St., Grove City.Both concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free to attend.
