6 VFDs respond, put out hot spots

JACKSON TWP — A cottage not far from the bank of the Connoquenessing Creek burned to the ground Wednesday.

Harmony Fire Department Chief Neal Nanna said he got the call at 3:48 p.m. that there was a fire at 103 Garing Lane.

By the time the first fire truck arrived, the structure was “fully involved” and had been burning for a while, Nanna said.

Firefighters doused the remains of the structure to put out any remaining hot spots and stop the smoke.

Nanna said he was uncertain who called 911, what utilities the building had, and when the fire may have started. There were no reported injuries.

“It appears unoccupied,” he said about the former cottage.

The owner is Robert Brown of Pittsburgh, Nanna said.

The state fire marshal was on the way later in the afternoon to investigate the cause of the fire, he said.

Garing Lane is a dirt road off Hartmann Road that runs alongside the Connoquenessing Creek. A sign near the entrance reads “Garing's Campground.”

The Harmony, Zelienople, Callery, Evans City, Prospect and Connoquenessing volunteer departments all responded to the call.

Eagle staff writer Tom Victoria contributed to this report.
