CLEARFIELD TWP — A 9-year-old Chicora girl was shot in the leg Friday after hunting with her father.

Travis Lau, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Game Commission, said the two were leaving a hunting blind along McGrady Hollow Road when the girl handed a .243-caliber rifle to her father.

“The gun discharged and hit the daughter in the left leg,” Lau said.

Following the accident, which occurred at 6:50 p.m., the girl was taken to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh for treatment.

The game commission has not released the names of the 47-year-old father or his daughter.

“We don't release names because we have an active investigation,” Lau said.

He said the girl was participating in the mentored youth hunting program.

WASHINGTON TWP — A section of Branchton Road opened Tuesday after the replacement of the Argentine Bridge over Slippery Rock Creek.The state Department of Transportation closed that section in June to replace the deficient bridge with a box culvert.Work remaining includes installation of guardrail using a flagger-controlled lane restriction at the bridge location.

LYNDORA — The Rotary Clubs of Butler, along with Lifesteps staff and volunteers, will host the longtime annual Rotary Pancake Festival on Tuesday, Election Day.Rotarians will serve pancakes and sausage from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Tanglewood Center, 10 Austin Ave, Lyndora.A tradition for more than 50 years, the event supports Lifesteps programs and services in Butler County.Each year, it serves as many as 1,500 people and usually raises more than $10,000 for the Lifesteps' Family Caring Fund.

ZELIENOPLE — Route 288 between Clay and New Castle streets will close at 6 a.m. Saturday for repairs to the railroad crossing.The section of the road will remain closed until work is done Tuesday morning.A detour will be in place using Route 488 to Route 19, then back to Route 288.A contractor for the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad will do the work.

BUTLER TWP — VA Butler Healthcare was notified on Oct. 20 that it received a three-year accreditation for ambulatory care, behavioral health care, home care, and nursing center care from the Joint Commission.The accreditation is based on a commitment to quality care, continuous improvement, and public accountability.The accreditation runs to Aug. 8, 2017.In August, VA Butler Healthcare participated in a four-day accreditation process by the Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies more than 20,500 health care organizations and programs in the U.S.
