Butler hockey cruises to 9-0 victory; Knoch volleyball suffers 5-game loss

Brendan Ackelson helped the Butler hockey team start the season with a heavy offensive outburst Monday night at Ice Connection.

Ackelson scored in every period to help the Golden Tornado defeat State College 9-0. Marcus McCall, Connor Scott and Trevor Gilliland also scored twice for Butler (1-0).

The Golden Tornado outshot State College 36-25. Butler goalie Clay Bachman made 25 saves to earn the shutout.

Deer Lakes 6, Mars 4 — Owen Vasbinder scored twice, but the Lancers scored two goals in the final four minutes to spoil the Planets' season opener.

Slater Hanna tied the game for Mars at 4-4 with 5 minutes, 40 seconds remaining. Beau Heakins also scored for the Planets.

Seneca Valley 5, Mt. Lebanon 3 — Sam Johnson broke open a 3-3 tie by scoring twice in the third period to help the Raiders win at Warrendale BladeRunners.

Alexender Crilley scored twice for Seneca Valley (1-1). Dylan Sloat made 14 saves to earn the win for the Raiders.

Chase Baxa scored twice to help Slippery Rock beat Sharon 4-1 in a Region 2-AA game.Nate Popejoy and Ben Magliocca also scored for the Rockets (9-5, 7-2).Seneca Valley 2, North Hills 0 — Cole Dengler and Matthew Happ scored for the Raiders (14-2, 11-1) in a Section 2-AAA game, while Bryce Benjamin earned the shutout in net.Karns City 4, Kittanning 1 — Noah Claypoole scored twice to helps the Gremlins earn a non-section win. Noah Pollock and Spenser Myers also scored for Karns City (14-2-1).On Saturday, the Gremlins beat Freeport 2-0, with Pollock and Myers scoring.

Emily LoPresti registered a hat trick to help Karns City beat Wilmington 6-2.Taylor Downs (twice) and Brianna Brusamonti also scored for the Gremlins (13-1).Mars 1, Mt. Lebanon 0 — Sabrina Edwards scored the game's only goal late in the second half.Sammy Papik tallied eight saves in net for the Planets (15-3).A strong effort was turned in by Mars defenders Judy Kahn, Annabel Hnath, Shannon Doyle and Amber Lisman.

Zoe Pawlak had 16 kills and 11 service points as Freeport cruised to a 25-8, 25-14, 25-17 non-section win over Fox Chapel.Grace Ward handed out 33 assists for the Yellowjackets (15-0), while Jessica Kelly had 16 blocks and seven kills.Karlie Hill led Freeport with 19 service points.Indiana 3, Knoch 2 — The Little Indians staved off a comeback attempt by the Knights to win a non-section match 25-20, 25-23, 8-25, 20-25, 15-11.Kiley Hajeck led Knoch with 10 kills and 10 service points. Lexi Graham and Katie Bozzo each added 11 kills for Knoch.Union 3, Brookville 0 — The Damsels won by scores of 25-12, 25-19 and 29-27.Emilee Rankin had seven assists, Hannah Atzeni five assists and Taylor Adams five kills.
