Scouts gear up to learn car care

Mechanic Jim Ungor works with a Mars Girl Scout troop from the Trefoil Service Unit on the Car Care interest patch. To earn the patch, at right, girls must demonstrate a knowledge of basic car care maintenance and green automotive practices.

Throughout their histories, both the Boy and Girl Scouts have lived by the motto “Be prepared.” That preparedness applies to all aspects of life, including car care.

The first step in earning the Boy Scouts of America's “Automotive Maintenance” merit badge is to secure access to a vehicle and its owner's manual.

According to a Boy Scouts' 2012 Merit Badge Series pamphlet, a Scout must demonstrate understanding of driving hazards and equipment to earn the Automotive Maintenance badge.

Irv Gable, Glacier Ridge District director, said his Scouts recently attended a handyman weekend camp where they spent some time learning vehicle maintenance.

“I think it's important for young men to learn how to work on their vehicles so that they can become self-sufficient in the future,” Gable said.

“Anybody that can increase their working knowledge as to how things are mechanically put together and maintained will be better off in the long run,” he said.

A Scout must be able to explain the most common hazards of automotive maintenance and “what you should do to anticipate, help prevent, mitigate or lessen these hazards,” according to the pamphlet.

Scouts must also demonstrate knowledge of the “safety equipment, tools, and clothing” used in vehicle maintenance.

Additionally, Boy Scouts are required to perform various general maintenance tasks. According to the pamphlet, Scouts may be responsible for researching the automotive industry and/or the vehicle purchasing process.

For Girl Scouts, the Car Care interest patch is part of the “It's Your Planet” badge set, according to forgirls.girlscouts.org.

Car Care is a practical life skills badge for senior level Girl Scouts.

To earn this patch, Scouts must demonstrate knowledge of basic car maintenance, vehicle safety and safe driving. Scouts also learn emergency preparedness and green automotive practices.
