PITTSBURGH — The Pennsylvania Department of Health today confirmed the first case of enterovirus D68 in southwestern Pennsylvania.

State health officials won’t discuss the person’s condition or say where in southwestern Pennsylvania the newest case is located.

The region includes Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Cambria, Greene, Fayette, Indiana, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

The state last month confirmed five cases of the virus that can cause severe respiratory illness in children in southeastern Pennsylvania.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have confirmed more than 500 cases in 42 states since August.

State health officials expect people exhibiting milder symptoms also probably have the virus but are assuming it to be a cold or the flu. Most of those infected recover in a couple of days.
